Paul Zway, the founder of Exclusive Tents, was shaped by the wild heart of nature. Raised in South Africa, his passion for the untamed was as intrinsic as the pulse of life itself.

The Genesis of a Visionary

As a boy, his bedroom transformed into a vibrant menagerie — a sanctuary for creatures as diverse as the venomous green and black mambas, squirrels, bush babies, a spotted eagle owl, a bullfrog, a monitor lizard, a sun gazer lizard, a jackal, a bat-eared fox, and hedgehogs. This eclectic collection mirrored his formative years spent camping, capturing snakes, and cultivating a profound reverence for the natural world—a foundation that would define his life’s work.

Guardian of the Wild

For Paul, the classroom could never rival the allure of the great outdoors. His calling led him to become the youngest professional Game Ranger in South Africa’s renowned Kruger National Park, where he immersed himself in the rhythms of the wilderness. Over seventeen years, he honed his expertise in anti-poaching, thriving in an environment that felt like home. Stationed initially in a remote wattle-and-daub thatched hut built in 1935 near the Mozambique border, Paul lived simply, using a tent as his office. It was here, in the vast expanse of the Kruger, that his affinity for tents took root, nurtured alongside his sons, who inherited his love for nature and adventure.

The Battle Against Poaching

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, rhino and elephant poaching escalated into an organized crisis. Paul specialized in anti-poaching and covert operations, spending extended periods camping in the bush, tracking poachers, and orchestrating ambushes. His efforts significantly curbed the illegal activities plaguing the region, though not without cost. His reputation among poachers grew, and when threats were made against his sons, Paul made the heart-wrenching decision to relocate his family to Arizona, USA. There, far from the savannah, he faced the challenge of adapting to an unfamiliar world, driving taxis and working in convenience stores to make ends meet.

A New Frontier: Luxury Tents

Paul’s spirit, however, remained that of an explorer. Unaccustomed to urban life, he found solace in the Sonoran Desert, where he and his sons would venture in their Jeep, accompanied by their dog, “Puppy,” exploring trails and forgotten mining towns. His entrepreneurial spark ignited when he launched a business importing BBQ tools and unique outdoor gear from South Africa. In 2004, a pivotal moment arrived when an elderly South African tent factory owner visited Paul in Arizona. Over campfire conversations, they envisioned introducing luxury tents to the United States—an idea born from Paul’s experiences with nascent “glamping” (glamorous camping) in the private game reserves bordering Kruger National Park.

With little capital but boundless determination, Paul, alongside his eldest son Zane, founded Exclusive Tents. Their first offering, the iconic Serengeti Tent, marked the beginning of a journey to redefine luxury camping. Paul’s intimate knowledge of tents, forged through years of living in basic, frameless canvas shelters during his youth and ranger days, inspired a vision for something extraordinary: tents that blended elegance, durability, and harmony with nature.

Innovation and Legacy

Exclusive Tents revolutionized the industry with innovative designs and meticulous craftsmanship. Paul and his team reimagined every element of the tent, incorporating premium fabrics, insulation, steel, and wood to create structures that were both robust and alluring. These tents withstood extreme climates while seamlessly blending into their surroundings, enhancing the natural aesthetic. In homage to Southern Africa’s majestic elephants, Paul named many designs after these legendary creatures, a tradition that endures as a testament to his roots.

Partnering with Johan Maree, a master canvas crafter in South Africa, Exclusive Tents became a unique, family-driven enterprise. While Johan’s family oversees manufacturing, Paul’s family manages branding, marketing, and sales. This personal, hands-on approach—free from corporate bureaucracy—has earned Exclusive Tents a reputation as the premier provider of bespoke luxury tents, opening doors to prestigious hospitality clients worldwide.

A Commitment to Conservation

At its core, Exclusive Tents embodies a lifelong dedication to preserving nature. The company integrates wildlife conservation and ecotourism with rural development, offering solutions that bridge luxury and environmental stewardship.
