Ahead of our Eco Resort Network 2024 event to be held at The Ravenala Attitude across May 18 – 22, we sat down with Juliette Deloustal, Sustainability Manager at Attitude Hotels, to find out more about their sustainability initiatives.

Juliette Deloustal

How did you come to be working for Attitude hotels in your role?

Five years ago, I joined Attitude Hotels to contribute to the development of the sustainability strategy. My journey with Attitude began during my studies in the tourism industry, where I specialized in sustainable development and completed several internships with the group. It was during this time that I discovered my deep passion for sustainability and my desire to make a meaningful difference.

I’ve come to realize the critical importance of integrating sustainability into business operations, particularly within the hospitality industry, where environmental and social impacts can have significant effects. I’m proud to be part of Attitude, where we take a proactive approach to minimize our environmental footprint while maximizing positive social and local impacts.

Can you outline some of the sustainability initiatives our guests can expect to see at the Ravenala and other Attitude hotels on the island?

All our customer experience reflects our commitments, whether it’s in our bulk shops where everything is done to reduce plastic waste and wastage, or, for example, in our restaurants that highlight our local products. Our guests can appreciate our promotion of local know-how in decoration, in their plates, but also in all experiences, such as our ‘Otentik experiences’. From the moment they arrive, our guests are engaged when we offer them to borrow a flask to eliminate plastic bottles or when we invite them to hang a piece of fishing nets collected on the beach on our ‘wall of hope’ to symbolize their commitment to responsible and inclusive tourism.

What are the areas which you are trying to look at in order to do even better?

We are continuously striving to improve! In July, we have plans to introduce a free mineral sunscreen for all our guests at Attitude Hotels. We initially launched this initiative in 2019 at Lagoon Attitude, and through collaboration with our local supplier, we are excited to announce that it will soon be available at all our hotels. We also are planning to improve the vegetarian and vegan offer in our hotels to go even further – we are today at 30% of the menus in our 4* hotels.

What is the story behind the dogs we saw during our stay at the Ravenala?

We have dog lounges to foster stray dogs – we also fund sterilizations and vet medication.

How can we as guests help to make the hotel more environmentally friendly?

As a committed group, we have made every effort to ensure that your holidays have a positive impact! For example, as mentioned before, applying mineral sunscreen before going snorkelling can help preserve the corals and marine biodiversity. You can also choose to treat yourself in local options during your drinks and meals. For instance, we are the only ones in Mauritius to have integrated local lychee wine into our all-inclusive package to support local production. Lastly, as a guest, you can visit our 100% local shops to support our talented local entrepreneurs.
